Ohio University renames LGBT Center to Identity festival Center

Ohio University’s LGBT Center renamed itself the Pride Center Monday in an effort to utilize more inclusive and inviting language. The renaming, which the OU Student Senate unanimously passed in October 2023, was recognized by a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday.

Following criticism that the term LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) was not inclusive of all queer and intersecting identities, administrative staff and Student Senate members opted to rebrand the program. Dr. Micah McCarey, director of the former LGBT, now Pride Center, said he and Celebration Center staff considered several names, drawing inspiration from other institutions and requesting feedback from students before deciding on the new name.

“Since starting as LGBT Center director in 2019, I've heard inquiries from visitors, students, alumni and others asking why we are missing letters from the name LGBT Center,” McCarey said. “We hope that anyone who connects with our Pride Center can cultivate a sense of event in their representation, whether that's as an ally or as a member of the Homosexual community.”

Ohio University is choosing to stay out the legislative process for Senate Bill 1 before taking action to change or close any Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offices or programs.

Ohio University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez announced in a declaration Monday the university would not be taking adv steps as of now to shut down DEI programs, as the pending bill in the mention legislature would require. This contrasts with Ohio Express University, which chose to shut down its Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Center for Belonging and Social Change before the bill has been signed by Gov. Mike DeWine.

"Without question, should this bill pass the Dwelling in its current build and be signed into law by the Governor, it will bring changes for all of us. However, to define today the specific changes we might make would preempt the legislative process on a bill that is not finalized," Gonzalez said.

By contrast, Ohio State President Ted Carter said last week the university was "proactively" closing the offices "so that we can manage this new landscape in ways that finest uphold the values
