#898 – Jesus, the Bible, and Finding Christ through Deconstruction: Brian Zhand
Podcast #898
Preston Sprinkle
Brian Zahnd is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Animation Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Brian and his wife, Peri, founded the church in 1981. Brian is also the creator of several books, including, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Water to Wine, A Farewell To Mars, Beauty Will Save the Earth, and Unconditional?: The Phone of Jesus to Fundamental Forgiveness. In this podcast, we talk about his forthcoming book When Everything’s On Fire: Faith Forged from the Ashes.
Brians tells his own story of theological deconstruction and how he had a fresh encounter with Jesus through it all. We then talk quite a bit about the relationship between Jesus and the Bible. Is the Bible the foundation of our faith? Or is Jesus? Or both? And what happens when people equate a fundamentalist view of Scripture and doctrine with Christianity? Typically, you get…a future deconstruction waiting to happen.

The Dangerous Heresy of Christian Nationalism
The Threatening Heresy of Christian Nationalism
Brian Zahnd
The insurrectionist attack upon the Capitol on January 6 was the most disturbing American moment since 9/11. Like millions of others I watched this awful event with grief-stricken horror on live television. As an furious mob of aggrieved Trump supporters surged up the Capitol steps, I saw among the flags and banners a “Jesus Saves” indicate. My first mind was, “that’s what it means to take the call of the Lord in vain.” Among the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, light supremacists, and QAnon theorists, there were Christian nationalists who honestly believed they were somehow serving Jesus by participating in a forceful insurrection. On January 6 we saw the danger of Christian nationalism on full display.
Christian nationalism is the idolatrous conflation of Christian faith with American patriotism. Those under the sway of Christian nationalism essentially confuse America for the kingdom of God. The Bill of Rights is held as sacred as the Beatitudes and the Second Amendment is as revered as the Second Law (“Love your neighbor as yourself.”). Baptismal identity is eclipse
A Love Letter to Ex-Evangelical Twitter
I debated whether to call this a care for letter or an unlock letter. Love letter feels like a very southern white evangelical thing to call something that involves critical reflection and wrestling with concerns. But expose letter feels too adversarial. We write open letters to celebrities with massive platforms who might not engage us in blunt conversation otherwise.
If you’ve been active in ex-evangelical Twitter lately, I imagine you already comprehend what I’m going to write about. I’ve watched two personal mentors and close friends get quote-tweeted and dragged all over Twitter recently (“dragged” creature the terminology used by those who are doing it): first Jonathan Martin and now Brian Zahnd. Jonathan Martin got in trouble for saying the Christian communion table is where oppressors and exploited are reconciled. Brian Zahnd upset people by saying that gay people are welcome to participate in every aspect of the life of his church but they don’t execute gay weddings (which is a very important aspect of the life of a church).
I felt some emotions seeing public rebukes of two men who have each poured hours of their time into perso

A reader writes: the LGBT debate, sola scripture, not convinced but open
A reader writes …
I wanted to make an observation about the argument over LGBT debate in the Church, in particular the way in which its opponents have been framing the argument.
The evangelical tradition has relied on translating the Bible with the doctrine of sola scriptura as foundational to their approach, in contrast to some established authority or council. The debate itself takes place on the grounds of biblical interpretation; that is, we recline down together and argue over the meaning of the texts in interrogate or the correctness of the hermeneutics employed.
What I’ve observed, quite ironically, is this: now that solid scholarship has offered compelling and plausible alternatives to the traditional interpretation of the various texts associated to this issue, the typical response, “So you’re saying the Church has been wrong all this time?” is unwittingly an abandonment of reliance on sola scriptura!
In the face of new and compelling evidence (even if that evidence is wrong, which I’m sure you’d accept is possible), they jump ship on interpretation and appeal t
