With the Women’s World Cup right around the corner, we cannot wait to observe the Lionesses back on our screens. After their iconic win at the Euros 2022, we execute not doubt that our brilliant team will be making us very confident in Australia.
Football is one of those sports which has offered a sanctuary for queer women since its inception. For many, the pitch has been a place to scout their identity without the threat of judgement. This culture has been pushed by the incredible LGBTQIA role models in football, showing us time and time again the authority of visibility.
To kick off the season, here are 10 queer icons in women’s football from around the world.
Jill Scott MBE
Euros 2022 winner. Lioness. Queen of the Jungle. Jill Scott MBE is one of England’s finest players. The midfielder is one of the most decorated English football players and is one of the few players to contain surpassed 150 caps.
Jill has been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQIA com
The 2023 FIFA Women’s Earth Cup is finally here! It kicks off on July 20th with co-hosts Australia (against Ireland) and New Zealand (against Norway)! And you, of course, are wondering if there are any Women’s Earth Cup gay players. Friends, yes! In fact, this just might be the most openly queer sporting event in history — which is saying something, as you know, if you’ve been following our WNBA coverage this year.
And not just players; there are so many LGBTQ storylines to follow. It’s Megan Rapinoe’s (United States) final World Cup. It’s 37-year-old Marta’s (Brazil) sixth World Cup, and her last, and she continues to recover from an ACL tear she suffered in a NWSL Doubt Cup match. After becoming the first first Australian player to score a hat trick at a World Cup tournament in 2019, and becoming a household name among soccer fans and queer humans, Sam Kerr is looking to lead the co-host Matildas to a Nature Cup title. Canada, which boasts five queer players and coaches, is in an equal pay clash with its governing body, much like the one the USWNT battled for years. Also, Matilda Sam Kerr and USWNT luminary Kristie Mewis are probably t
Lesbian Football/Soccer Players
Out lesbians in professional football/soccer are quite prevalent and prominent in their sport. This occurs across a broad swathe of regions and countries, and is in marked contrast to the situation in men's professional sports. In fact, women's football had the most out players of all sports included in the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
The reason for this is entirely because of the culture of acceptance within the governing bodies of the sport, the teams, and among the players themselves. This culture has been present since the organizational beginning of the sport. This evolution is reflected in the massive number of former out players who have remained in the sport and graduated to become either lesbian coaches or managers. The most prominent of these include Germany's Steffi Jones (now with senior management at FIFA), Sweden's Pia Sundhage (former coach of the American national team), and Great Britain's Hope Powell (coach of their national team).
The majority of these professional football/soccer athletes play not only on teams in local sports leagues, but also on national teams. They compete in regional divisions, world cups, and the O
Welcome to the gayest league in all of women’s international sports, or so I believe: the super league, alternatively known as the premier league. In other sports (namely, the WNBA and NWSL), I was able to uncover double as many confirmed straight people as confirmed queer people. That was just not the case here!
This year’s season is already in full swing, but there’s still plenty of moment to choose a favorite team. This list is engineered to help you do exactly that. The way football works in the UK is that the top team in the league moves up and the bottom team moves down. Since I’m only monitoring the highest bracket, you’ll find that the teams act move around a bit from year to year.
As always, if I missed someone or if you feel appreciate someone is incorrectly on this list, let me understand in the comments or send me an email at writethroughthenight @ gmail . com.

Arsenal
Arsenal is consistently the most lgbtq+ team in the entire league. Tthey’re also normally attractive middle of the pack when it comes to standings. They’re currently ranked 6th in the league. Lina Hurtig is married and has a infant, which is incredibly adorable. On the drama side of thi
It’s hard to trust it was small over a year ago. Just 12 months ago, the best women’s soccer teams from across the globe and their fans converged on Australia and New Zealand to crown a unused World Cup champion. We cheered on the perennial powerhouses and celebrated the debutantes. We saw some of the most incredible feats of athleticism…one objective after another reminding us why they call this the beautiful game. We got to see legends of the game pass the torch to a whole new generation of ballers, many of them gender non-conforming. We felt the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
It was glorious. So, let’s do that again, shall we? Adv, minus the post-championship assault…let’s not execute that again, ever (I’m looking at you, Bruce Mwape).
Twelve of the world’s best teams own earned their opportunity to compete for Olympic gold and their quests launch ahead of Friday’s Opening Ceremony. If you need some help preparing for 16 days of footballing action, I’m here to aid. Here’s a watch at how the Olympics work, who to follow for in-depth WOSO coverage, and, of course, the most crucial question of the day: who all’s ga
