LGBTQ rights group reports progress at U.S. companies despite conservative backlash

A national rights group said Tuesday that more U.S. companies are providing strong benefits and protections to LGBTQ employees despite an ongoing endeavor by conservative activists to get high-profile brands to stop participating in the organization’s annual workplace describe card.

The education arm of the Human Rights Campaign released its latest Corporate Equality Index the evening after McDonald’s became the latest big company to say it would no longer provide information for the annual evaluation of policies affecting lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transgender employees.

Last year, Walmart, Ford, Harley-Davidson and other consumer brands that came under pressure said they would conclude their voluntary participation in the grading system. The HRC rated them anyway, giving Harley-Davidson a score of 10 out of 100 and Ford a 75, for example.

The index has emerged as a top target of conservative activists as part of a broader campaign to pressure businesses into abandoning diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that were crafted to reduce discrimination against women, members of racial and ethnic mino

McDonald's ends support for LGBT community

Chicago, IL - After months of pressure from an anti-gay group, McDonald's has withdrawn from the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

The Mississippi-based American Family Association (AFA), a conservative Christian team, encouraged members to boycott McDonald's over the fast-food chain's association with the national gay business corporation and supporting "the cultural war over homosexuality."

The economic impact of the AFA boycott remains unclear as McDonald's sales own continued to be tough, yet Oakbrook-based McDonald's Corp. has given up a director's seat and will stop sponsorship of the NGLCC.

McDonald's says that vice president of communications Richard Ellis' decision to step down from the business group was personal and based on his relocation to Canada, where he's accepted a fresh position with McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Ltd.

Ellis, an openly gay man, sat on the Chamber's board and had donated $200,000 of his own coins to the organization.

"Diversity and inclusion are integral components of our mark and our heritage," McDonald's said in a statement.

Companies like State Farm and McDonalds declare they support LGBT rights, but their franchisees and agents sometimes have other ideas

The franchisees and agents of companies like McDonald's and State Farm directed vast sums to legislators that backed some of the most anti-LGBT legislation passed this year.

Arkansas was one of several states across the US that enacted legislation restricting trans women from playing on women's sports teams during the 2021 legislative session and was the only mention to pass legislation that aims to remove access to medical care and punish those who treat trans youth.

Insider pored through campaign finance records from the Arkansas Secretary of State for the 76 members of the Arkansas legislature who sponsored House Bill 1570 or Senate Bill 354. We then digitized the records to identify key corporate supporters and found that several corporations that position themselves as LGBT allies have agents, employees, and franchise owners that donated to the sponsors of Arkansas legislation using their company's name and branding since 2018.

State Farm Insurance, for example, frequently takes part in local Celebration Month events and proudly touts the company's s
