Ice cream manufacturer Streets has shut down fresh rumours that Australia’s iconic Golden Gaytime is transforming its name.
The chat kicked off because an Aldi shopper discovered the Australian supermarket was selling packs of the ice creams with a different name.
The Aldi Australia customer shared a photo to a Facebook group of the box containing the ice creams, but with “Cookie Crumble” on the label.
“They’re Gaytimes, just a new name due to political correctness,” one person commented.
“Is this a renaming thing?” another asked.
“Is the ‘Gaytime’ renamed due to the ‘offensive’ name, appreciate Redskins, Chicos and Coon Cheese of late that own been renamed?”
But a spokesperson for Streets shut down the rumours and addressed the confusion.
They told 7News that Cookie Crumble is the name given to the ice cream in New Zealand. The spokesperson said the alternate product is available at Australian Aldi stores for a limited time.
They also confirmed there are no plans to adjust the name of Golden Gaytime in Australia.

The first Streets Gaytime was not golden. It was a combination of ice cream, chocolate and strawberry shortcake. The famous Golden version, with a biscuit coating surrounding toffee and vanilla ice cream, did not arrive until 1970. There have been a variety of flavours, but the Golden Gaytime is the one that has become an Australian sustenance icon.
According to marketingmag.com.au there have been about 25 different flavours. They tell “The current and most successful one is the ‘Golden’ Gaytime, which was launched in the summer of 1970. Past flavours have included Strawberry Shortcake, Caramel Nut, King Chocolate, Raspberry Rough, Choc Orange, Cassata Roma, Devil’s Sustenance (chocolate) and Turkish Delight.”
The Golden Gaytime arrived in the pre-Sydney Mardi Gras era when the synonyms ‘gay’ had yet to be applied to sexual orientation. However, the call has proved resilient and even the line ‘It’s hard to have a Gaytime on your own’ has been embraced in full recognition of its new double meaning. In New Zealand, the similar product is called a ‘Cookie Crumble’. Somehow ‘It’s hard to have a Cookie Crumble on your own’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
