Building Trust in the LGBTQ Community

June 12, 2019

In this second letter about one of our eight Trust Practice Test winners, we are highlighting and reflecting on what we can discover about building trust.

UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway in Cedar Falls, Iowa has integrated an LGBTQ clinic into its family medicine clinic, serving a population of more than 40,000 including students from the University of Northern Iowa, a state university in the area.  The clinic is open two evenings per month from 5 to 7 p.m. and is staffed by full-time employees of other UnityPoint Clinic locations who work there in addition to their regular duties at their “home clinics.”

The clinic focuses on creating a welcoming, comfortable environment for people in the LGBTQ group. Team members are trained to doubt patients about pronouns and their preferred name, a little but affirming step for patients who identify as gender nonconforming or gender-fluid. The competencies identified for this practice include:

  • Mindset: showing up with the intention to adapt the look after experience to be personal and relaxed for everyone served.
  • Openness: to sensitivity and bias awareness.

UnityPoint Health Prairie Parkway LGBTQ Clinic

The Prairie Parkway LGBTQ Clinic occurs two evenings per month at one of UnityPoint Health’s established Family Medicine clinics in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The clinic is staffed by providers and staff who are all full-time employees of other UnityPoint clinics across the Waterloo region, along with a physician who is employed at a regional Federally Qualified Health Center. The clinic provides primary care and routine exams, vaccinations, routine cancer screening, contraceptive handling, STI testing and treatment, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), hormone therapy, post-surgical care accompanying gender affirming procedures, and on-site lab testing and radiology. Unity Point Health is a network of hospitals, clinics and dwelling care services in 14 locations throughout Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin.

Clinic workflow is designed to avoid potential misstep, particularly where healthcare has historically missed opportunities to create a positive experience for LGBTQ people. There is a devoted phone line and email, managed by only two people who are trained to query the patient on pronouns and a preferred name. This petty yet critical step helps

The second event, “Transparent – A Story of Our Family,” was presented on June 23 by Dr. Kyle Christiason, a family medicine physician who helped uncover the Unity Signal Health Prairie Parkway LGBTQ Clinic in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Pride Month is famous across The University of Alabama and is a UA-supported initiative that seeks to make campus a more diverse and inclusive place for students, faculty and staff.
