LGBTQ, Traumatized Homeless Youth More Vulnerable to Being Trafficked, Report Finds

ATLANTA — Sympathy how homeless youth are trafficked is important communication for the organizations offering them services.

That’s the final word of a report released today based on a 2018 count of homeless and runaway young people ages 14-25 in Atlanta.

“Clearly, talking about trafficking is critically important,” said Eric Wright, chairman of the sociology department at Georgia State University, who led the survey and report.

Atlanta Youth Count 2018 launch about 3,372 homeless new people in the five-county metro area, about as many as were counted in 2015. It start a high prevalence of sex and labor trafficking. One-fifth of the youth had experienced commercial sex exploitation.

“The labor trafficking was much more prevalent than the sex trafficking,” Wright said.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime defines human trafficking as the “acquisition of people by improper means such as force, fraud, or deception, with the aim of exploiting them” for labor or sex.

Why Do Diverse Youth Experience Homelessness?

Like many youth facing homelessness, it's often not just one thing that causes them to life homelessness. Some may be facing poverty or subjected to abuse in the home, while others may have aged out of the foster care system.

But the most ordinary reason that Homosexual youth experience homelessness is family clash due to their gender identity or expression or their sexual orientation. Many young people narrate us heartbreaking stories of rejection and eviction that led to life on the streets.

Youth Shelter and Housing 

Our Atlanta youth shelter offers four types of housing, including: 

  • Crisis Shelter: Our emergency shelter, for young people ages 18-24, offers safety, food, clothing, showers, and a place to stay for up to 90 days. 
  • Transitional Housing: Rights of Passage is a 2-year independent living program. Young people obtain experience living in apartment-style housing with support from case managers. 
  • Gift of Long for Apartments: On-site apartment building. Offers another path to independent living for our young people.   
  • Pregnant & Parenting Youth Program: Provides shelter and housing for pregnant youth, young parents, and their children.
