Introducing new people to rum

Kudzey1

I believe in not the only one here trying to popularize rum among friends . I’ve discovered that the rums I’ve learned to enjoy are difficult for the new rum drinker.

I remember sharing a Tiger Shark with my friend and his other companion came, insisting to let her strive. I remember how terrified she was, swearing she will never try rum again. This is a kind of situation I’d favor to avoid

I developed a system of teaching people how to approach rum, not only with mouth but also eyes and nose. For inexperienced, I always launch with Plantation XO, then my first question is what they think about sweetness. Then we continue either with Mount Gay XO or Diplomatico (If one dares to say that Plantation XO was TOO DRY ). I try to always have something usable at hand.

What are your methods of initiation the fresh drinkers? Are you successful in general? I think I brought 4 friends to the Caroni-enjoyment-level but many others left the solemn path of rum too early

Short answer:

  1. Explain that Don Papa, Demon’s share, captain Morgan’s spiced gold (and all that other cough syrup crap)… is NOT rum

  2. Dosed rums: plantation doorlys 5 year vs mt gay eclipse

Doorly's XO Fine Old Barbados Rum

About the Doorly's XO Fine Old Barbados Rum
Doorly's XO rum sets itself apart with a secondary aging process in antique Spanish oak sherry casks. This is a seriously complex Bajan rum with a lot of nature, and is generally regarded as one of the best offerings in its price range (honestly, we could see this selling for more than twice what you can obtain it for at most stores).

Today I am reviewing an offering from the awesome Foursquare Distillery, Barbados.  The island often cites itself as the birthplace of rum.  The oldest “official” (ie legal) rum distillery in the world is the Mount Gay Distillery, so its a fair enough claim to make.  They also have plenty of other facts to support up their claims if you look into rums rich history.

Doorly’s 5 (for short) is the least aged of the rums I have reviewed from Foursquare.  If we discount the Spiced which isn’t a regular rum.  After the 3 year old colorless, this is the companies entry level rum.

In the UK Doorly’s 5 is slightly more difficult to detect than the XO but is usually priced around the £19-22 mark.  It is bottled at 40% ABV in a 70cl bottle.  The presentation in the Doorly’s line is consistent and can cause confusion particularly online as it is similar to the Doorly’s XO.  So be meticulous when looking around.

I appreciate the look of the Doorly’s its clear and uncluttered and gives sufficient background information.  Overall its kind and clean.  I always prefer a stubby way rum bottle and whilst I would prefer a corked stopper at £20, a metal screw cap

Doorly’s XO Fine Old Barbados Rum.  From the house of Martin Doorly no less.  None the wiser? No me neither.  The rum is produced by R. L. Seale at the superb Foursquare Distillery.  So what does this Doorly fellow have to do with it exactly?

Well, in 1906 the Rum Duty Perform was passed and this caused considerable changes to how rum was distributed in Barbados.  The fresh law meant that distilleries had to obtain a licence and could only sell rums in bulk.  Many of the distillers became bottlers instead. Of these Martin Doorly & Co.  The maturation of branded names began and Martin Doorly evolved into Doorly Macaw Rum and became the first bottled rum to be exported from the island.

As second has passed the firm was bought out by R.L. Seale who continues to make Doorly’s rum.  The front of the bottle gives a little information on how Doorly’s XO is matured for a second hour in Oloroso Sherry Casks.  (From my limited comprehension of Sherry this is a sweeter blend but don’t quote me on that).

Unlike Rum Sixty Six  (12 Year Old) and R.L. Seale’s 10 Year Old there is no defining age statement on this rum.  Whilst usually this might cause a critical e

Mount Gay Eclipse Gold Rum: "Real Rum, Pure and Simple"

In time you will come to get that rum is impure more than it is pure. And that much of the faux complexity comes to us courtesy of the taste engineers. Caramel beyond coloring, hidden sugar, synthetic vanilla, liquid "spices" like clove and so on. To the point that a profitable low-cost, young, continuously distilled and relatively undistinguished rum can be caused to preference like an well-aged expensive, pot-stilled flavorful rum.

And sold at premium prices. Reflect the Zee rums.

Some of the distillers even admit it in interviews, enjoy 1 Barrel and Ron del Barillito, chock full of unlabeled flavors, yet still proudly labeled pure "rum" in defiance of the accepted laws of the European Union, the United States and all the member of the Association of Caribbean States - which is just about all the rum producing countries in the region.

    Pooh.

Thus the Preacher's wet envision of "rum, the noble spirit" is little more than a stain on his flowing orange silk robe. That's about as mixed up as the myth that "mixers" are somehow distinguished from "sippers". We are led to believe that mixers are lacking in ways that (a) require t
