DENVER — This isn’t Candy Pratt’s first rodeo.
Stirrups, steers and stallions dash deep in Pratt’s family. She grew up in Irving, Texas, where she attended the Mesquite Rodeo and Fort Worth Stock Exhibit before she was old enough to identify the animals in the arena.
But in a tradition dominated by hyper-masculinity, Pratt, a woman loving woman, felt unsure of her place in the Western scene as she grew older.
“I did rodeo all the way back in the 80s, when you had to cover who you were, especially in that kind of scene,” said Pratt, 64. “Back in those days, you really had to mask your life as a woman, a gay person or both if you wanted to fit in in the rodeo culture.”
Now, she’s a fixture in a different nice of rodeo circuit. Pratt competed in 10 of the 13 events at her 27th Rocky Mountain Regional Rodeo Sunday at the National Western Complex in Denver. The Colorado Gay Rodeo Association (CGRA) hosted the event.

Protected and expanded trans healthcare in Colorado
In 2023, we partnered with state leaders to incorporate gender-affirming care into both the Colorado Insurance Benchmark Plan and the Colorado Medicaid policy. Additionally, we partnered with the Secure Access to Health Tend Coalition to enact SB23-188, a law ensuring protection for all involved in gender-affirming care in Colorado.
