That’s never a good launch, is it? You can be same-sex attracted, but it’s a little complicated? Doesn’t really give any confidence. So, let’s start on the parts of Fire Emblem: Three Houses that do.
When you start the game it asks you what you glance like, and then gives a typically masculine and feminine presenting pair of characters. No matter who you select, you’ll be acknowledged as Byleth (though you are fit to change your name) and your gender will be referred to multiple of times through dialogue, as successfully as who you can and can’t romance in-game. In preparing to write this article, I watched video of some of the S-rank romantic supports main character Byleth can possess in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. As I’m still playing through the game myself, I needed context for the carried on discussion about the same-gender romantic supports in the game. I was entirely prepared to be irate at the male/male options in the game, which are—to be blunt—incredibly poor on multiple levels. What I did not expect was to observe Byleth’s marriage proposal to Edelgard and be infuriated by it.

I remember the first hour I encountered Alois Trancy: Black Butler II opens with him naked on a canopy bed, dishevelled and bruised all over, sitting next to a naked old man in a red, luxurious-looking room. In that moment he formed a contract with a demon while repeating to himself, “I pick this, I want this.” This scene was relying on its shock factor to introduce the audience to Alois’ tortuous narrative arc, and for me, it fulfilled its aim well.
I rewatched these limited minutes many times in a row to fully grasp what I was looking at. What struck me was both the implied crudity of the scenery and Alois’ visible agency. Since then, despite the fact that he’s a character quite hated by the audience, I’ve loved the Earl Alois Trancy as a multi-layered character that carries many intertwined themes around kid abuse, queerness, genre influences and slut-shaming.
